This group was founded 1974 with clarinet-player Hiroyuki Yoshikawa as the leader.
Playing Chicago Style Jazz and starting their activity mainly in Osaka and environs,
the south Side was a professional Dixieland Jazz Band unique, in Japan.
Since their founding
They have been in great demand, doing concerts and recording with foreign artists
like Keith Smith, Ted Thomas and many others, including the late Don Ewell, Ralf
Sutton, Wild Bill Davison.
In 1984
They toured Japan, performing in five major city. The same year, they recorded
on LP titled “South Side Wind” and issued on Work Shop Records.
As part of the Sister Cities program they played in the mecca of jazz, Chicago,
musical exchange mission from Osaka, receiving enthusiastic welcome. It was their
first great success abroad. 1988, they received a second invitation from Chicago
and participated in festivals in several other cities, as well.

The South Side’s musical drive caused a sensation in Chicago” That Sensation assured
the success of their succeeding two tours of the U.S.
In October ,1986,
They played with the world renowned cornet player late Wild Bill Davison, and
with Kustbanted, the excellent twelve-piece band from Sweaden, when they toured
Japan for the first time in 1991.
These joint concerts thrilled and fascinated Japanese jazz fans, who understood
that jazz community is truly International.
In 1992
On the recommendation of the Jazz violin virtuoso Stephane Grapelli the South
Side performed in Marciac, France, at the 15th Jazz Festival In Marciac .
In the last five years
They appeared China,Tianjing,Dairen,and Korea.
They took part in the drama on NHK-TV “Naniwa no Genzo Jikencho” Starring late
Shijyaku Katura and were in charge of music production for the show .
They had a long run on the morning TV drama again on NHK-TV.Their They appeared
as musicians in the band in which the hero played and again were in charge of
music production for the series.
Their frequent TV appearance gained them national popularity. In 1996 ~ 2004.

What lies ahead for the South Side Jazz Band ?
Their vast experience performing at concerts and festivals and their great success
with music production and performance have prepared them for a busy future.
Clarinetist and Leader Hiroyuki ”yoshi” Yoshikawa
Yoshi was born 1947.He had studied clarinet at an early age, and at Kyoto University
Of Foreign Studies he founded a Traditional Jazz Band which, after many changes,
eventually become the South Side Jazz Band . After graduation, he began playing
clarinet professionally ,appearing at Osaka Expo in 1970. Several month later,
he went to the U.S and studied at Eubanks Conservatories in LA California.
His love of jazz kept him busy performing in California with The “Fink Street
Five” and many other groups around the U.S.
Returning to Japan in 1974, he founded the current South Side Jazz Band with Shouji
Fujimori , a jazz pianist known for his exciting stride piano style.
Apart from his excellent clarinet-playing , his skillful talent as a band leader
has made South Side Jazz Band a successful, unique professional group among the
many Traditional Jazz Band in Japan |
